BEACHY MAKEOVER
BRIEF: Transform a 1970’s disaster to a warm, airy and modern Beachside Beauty.
BUDGET: $30,000
The art deco tiles were cool, colourful and quirky, but all of the flooring in every room was different and it was a hotchpotch. It was advised it would be costly and a nightmare, with dust and mess to remove the flooring. It was easier and more cost effective to have a slurry laid over the top, then vinyl hardwood flooring in beachy tones were used. They are low maintenance and give a modern scandi look.
The most unappealing thing in this house was the oppressive heavy brick in every room from a gone by era. Plastering and painting this all white gave it all an instant lift. We kept the exposed beam and textured wood panelling walls and these were also painted white.
The kitchen couldn’t be salvaged. At 50 years old it had done a great job, and it was time for it to go. Gloss white cabinetry and white subway tiles and open shelving unit gave the kitchen a modern appeal. There was an ugly post right in the middle of the bench top that we had to have engineering done on at a cost of $1000 to have it removed but it was worth it.
Quite a bit of electrical had to be redone to replace worn fans, and new down-lights throughout. A large island was installed and doubled for a breakfast bar.
Dated venetian blinds were replaced with pulldown roller blinds and soft sheer curtains to allow light in. There was an unsightly view of a faded timber fence outside these windows, so we painted the fence in dark grey and planted the garden bed out with lovely tropicals that gave it a nice view.
A 1970s yellow glass inserts in the front door panelling were replaced with frosted clear glass. A wall between the kitchen and the lounge was partially removed to allow for a more open floor plan.
Cabinetry for the TV and storage was added plus another one in the living room in timber to house books, objects and displays
